Sample Chapter IX

Thomas and Garret sat on a woodpile outside one of the small, stone dwellings as snow still drifted from the sky. Dawn seemed to be preparing to break over the horizon as the two swayed and sang, loudly and very off key. Garret’s eyes watched Jonathan’s hulking shadow follow the figure of a British officer down the road.

The officer, approaching the alley, and seeing the two apparently drunken men and sitting there singing, yelled gruffly at them. “You two! You call yourselves soldiers? You should be ashamed to call yourselves soldiers in the king’s army! Return to your post this instant before you’re considered deserters!”
Garret stood up and gave a wonderfully performed drunken walk as he staggered towards the officer and grabbed both of the golden braids that hung by his shoulders.
“Ohh….this gold stuff is shiny…” Garret pulled the tassels to his face and began rubbing them against his cheek. “And soooo soft….”
The officer, snarling, shoved Garret back and into the wall with a thud, stepping backwards.
His mouth opened to yell at Garret, but no words came out of his mouth as a crushing blow came from behind and struck him in the neck.
The officer collapsed to the ground and rolled on to his back. The officer made an attempt to rise, but Jonathan sent a reinforcing kick to the man's temple, sending him into unconsciousness.
The trio proceeded to take the officer's clothes off and gave them to Jonathan who went around to the back of one of the small houses, and proceeded to dress in the officer's clothing. When Jonathan came back around the corner Garret and Thomas stared at him. Unlike Garret and Thomas' uniforms that hung loosely over their thin bodies, Jonathan barely fit in to his newly acquired clothing. Thomas then handed a small British made pistol to Jonathan, which he placed in his belt.
In a terrible British accent, Jonathan said "Well my soldiers, let us go into the town and see if we can find those escaped prisoners."
